Pressure induced stresses were determined photoelastically in the hatch reinforcement region of a submarine. The photoelastic model from a previous investigation was modified by the addition of large reinforcing plates which were machined down in stages. The experimental data at each stage provided the trend of structural behavior as a function of reinforcement size. The maximum stress was found to be 47 percent greater than the nominal circumferential value. It occurred in the area between the deviated rib and its adjacent rib when the largest reinforcement was used. With no reinforcement the maximum stress was as much as 70 percent above the nominal circumferential stress. Author
