Abstract:

There has been little study of pictorial descriptions of the type capable of being produced by a human observer. Such studies are important, not only for retrieval applications, but also because they give insight into the subtle deductive capabilities of the human, and indicate the type of epistemological knowledge required to automate the descriptive process. An approach is presented for obtaining such descriptions, deriving the canonical forms, and dealing with the problem of completeness. Observations are made concerning deductive and metadescriptive aspects of description, based on experiments using subjects having various backgrounds and sets. The symbolic representation derived from such descriptions is thought of as an encyclopedia entry for the body of knowledge residing in the photograph. Author
