On the Thermodynamic States of Plastically Deformed Solids.

An argument is presented that the existing difficulties in the thermodynamics of plasticity lie in the overemphasis placed on macro-plastic strains and a particular history associated with it. It is proposed that any plastically deformed states can be adequately represented by an adjacent elastic state constrained with stationary dislocations. Some elementary, but critical, results are obtained including 1 the resolution of Druckers dilemna concerning the temperature dependence of yield stress and 2 a proof of the path independence of idiabatic deformations in the small. Also a conjecture is offered that the chemical potential may be assigned so as to deal with elastic-plastic transitions. Author
