Abstract:

The basic theory of parametric coexcitation of ion-acoustic and electron plasma waves by a high frequency electric field is reviewed. Numerical calculations show that plasma-neutral collisions and steady state drift velocities have a significant influence on the interaction. Parametric excitation of ionacoustic waves is observed experimentally in a helium dc discharge. The observations indicate that the radial density profile of the dc discharge modifies the parametric effect. In the absence of an applied field, unstable electron drift-excited ion-acoustic waves are experimentally observed. These waves are found to satisfy the dispersion relation for a plasma consisting of He and He 2. Author
