Abstract:
Among the monomers that give some expansion on polymerization is the spiro ortho ester, 1,4,6-trioxaspiro4,4-nonane. When polymerization of this monomer was carried out in a dilatometer at 25 deg., the meniscus rose during the polymerization to give a final expansion at 95 conversion of 0.14. The polymer, which had the expected analysis and spectra, has a molecular weight of about 25,000. Thus, the principle that bicyclic monomers can be prepared that will polymerize with expansion has been clearly demonstrated. Author
