Linear time-invariant systems of minimal order n with r inputs and s outputs are considered. For such systems a description with s differential- or difference equations is derived which shows the following properties In the equations only input or output quantities appear, but no internal state variables of the system The sum of the orders of the different equations is equal to the minimal order n of the system The smallest possible number of parameters is used for the characterization of the system. In the worst case, this number is n rs. As an application example of this system discription, the problem of finding the minimal order, the structure and the parameters of the mathematical model of a system is solved, knowing the exact discrete measurements of all disturbances, inputs and outputs in normal operation.
