Abstract:

Thinwalled cylinders are very efficient in supporting compression loadings. In modern engineering they are frequently utilized for rockets and storage silos, for example. The test cylinder is loaded by purely axial compression. The cylinder is manufactured from a plastic foil. The yield stress of the foil at room temperature is so high, that the post-buckling events in the region of moderate axial shortening are purely elastic. During the shooting of the pictures the foil was heated by the studio lights. This caused permanent plastic deformations. Hence different specimens had to be used. Author
