Experimental work performed in the DFVLR gun tunnel made a free-flight testing system desirable. Design criteria for a free-flight testing system were derived and applied to selection and development of system and system components. The model dropping technique was decided to be an adequate solution for gun tunnel application. A magnetic model suspension device was constructed and optimalized with respect to the requirements of gun tunnel operation. Furthermore a tracing system based on pulsed light beam emission from and on RF-energy transmission to the free-flying model was developed. Several problems of tracing system performance were investigated and solved satisfactorily.
