Abstract:

Carbon vaporization studies are continuing under a new contract. In preparation for mass spectral studies extending well beyond 3000K, the original, high sensitivity, single electron beam aperture ion source has been reinstalled and found to be at least temporarily adequate for normal mass spectrometry of modulated beams. Its time response is still not suitable for time-of-flight velocity analysis. Induction heating tests of various all graphite, shielded, Knudsen cells have been carried out in one atmosphere argon in a very simple arrangement that permits rapid interchange of parts and easy visual observations of heating behavior. Using a recently acquired, automatic, recording, photoelectric pyrometer, an optimized cell has been heated in vacuum and species C1,...,C7 measured at temperatures up to 3300K.
