A new journal bearing concept for gas and vapor lubrication is studied. This concept employs the stable tilting pad bearing operated under hybrid combined hydrostatic and hydrodynamic conditions. An analytical approach is developed which incorporates a number of the fluid flow features to be expected of such a bearing operating at high speed and fed by high pressure steam. Results based on this analysis are used to establish an effective configuration for the bearing. The stability characteristics of this configuration are computed, and the overall performance is compared with a plain self-acting tilting-pad bearing of the same size. Author
