Critical Behavior of Metallic Immiscible Liquid Binary Systems.

Different aspects of the critical behavior of the metallic binary systems Ga-Hg and Li-Na have been investigated experimentally. In the Ga-Hg system the coexistence curve was determined by measuring the electrical resistivities of the two distinct layers of the liquid mixture which are established below the critical temperature Tc. The specific heat at constant pressure, cp, shows an anomaly at the temperature of phase separation. The results show that in the critical region the liquid metallic binaries do not behave qualitatively different than the nonconducting immiscible binaries. In the Li-Na system the temperature derivative of the resistivity of the homogeneous mixture increases rapidly as Tc is approached from above showing an anomaly like cp. Author
