Abstract:

The report gives a brief account of a liason visit to the Institut fur Plasmaphysik, which is one of the fourteen laboratories that constitute the impressive Kernforschungsanlage Julich GmbH near Aachen. The author reports that plasma physics and controlled fusion research has been intensified in the direction of confinement of high temperature plasmas, with main emphasis on the equilibrium and stability properties of axisymmetric compact magnetic field configurations. Besides a better understanding of collisionless shocks, the most notable recent achievement refers to the efforts to construct and operate a Tokamak-like toroidal device with values of beta in the vicinity of 10, which is better than an order of magnitude larger than the low beta Russian Tokamaks.
