Abstract:

Research in rotating fluids concentrated on those topics which are of central importance to most areas of application. Boundary layer methods were used extensively to solve the basic equations governing the motion of a contained incompressible viscous fluid such as water in a simple controlled environment. Analytical procedures are pivoted about the inviscid linear solution, and a study of this reduced problem led to a fairly complete general theory. A general method was developed to examine the effects of dispersion and non-linearity for a variety of fluid flow configurations. A study was made of the way in which the spectral functions of random, spatially homogeneous, dispersive waves vary slowly in time due to weakly non-linear interactions. It was also shown that linear diffusion processes may be significantly altered by weak non-linear effects. New numerical methods were developed for the solution of hydrodynamics problems which give considerably more efficient and accurate simulations than those of known finite-difference methods.
