Combustion of deuterium and fluorine in a preburner, finite rate supersonic expansion of the reaction products, and finite rate mixing between parallel, supersonic streams of preburner reaction products and hydrogen-carbon dioxide mixtures are analyzed to establish design criteria for a small continuous wave HF andor HF-CO2 transfer laser. Parametric variations of preburner and secondary injectant total pressures, mixture ratios, relative nozzle sizes and expansion ratios resulted in the selection of optimum nozzle arrangements and operating conditions for the generation of HF or CO2 population inversions, and thus potential power output, from the laser cavity.
