A direct perturbation optimization technique with second-order convergence is presented that is particularly designed for implementation on a hybrid computer. The method satisfies direct terminal equality and inequality constraints on the state variables and trajectory equality and inequality constraints on the control and state variables. Linear and nonlinear systems with single or multiple inputs can be handled and the terminal time can be fixed or free. The technique appears to be especially useful in the design of suboptimal flight controls for helicopters where some aircraft states are too costly or difficult to measure. Author
