Abstract:

The original report 1878 of Captain James B. Eads Improvement at the Mouth of the St. Johns River is reporduced with an introduction Memorandum Regarding James B. Eads Contribution to the Design of Tidal Inlets by M. P. OBrien. OBriens appraisal regards the report as being of value to coastal engineering, and says Eads went beyond general principles to a quantitative relationship between tidal prism and throat area which is in agreement with measurements elsewhere.... Eads stated a number of general principles regarding tidal inlets which subsequent experience has shown to be valid. Author
