Using microscopic techniques, the high pressure diamond cell was used to investigate the nature and optical characteristics of polymorphic changes in transparent solids and liquids. A microscope spectrophotometer was designed and constructed. The technique of handling liquids in the diamond high pressure cell were vastly improved. The effect of pressure on the transmission fluorescence spectra of a few compounds were studied. The determination of the pressure distribution in the opposed anvil high pressure optical cell was verified and extended. A method was also developed for determining compressibility from pressure distribution data. Author
