Abstract:

Mechanically precipitated coarse and electrostatically precipitated fine fly ashes were investigated by petrographic, X-ray, chemical, and physical test methods to develop information on the particle size distribution of the coarse and fine fractions of coarse and fine fly ashes, and to determine whether the coarse and fine fractions of a given fly ash differ in characteristics other than particle size. The essential composition of both fly ashes varied significantly with particle size for example, glass content appeared to increase with decreasing particle size. It was concluded, therefore, that a given size fraction of either fly ash would have essentially similar composition provided the fraction was taken within fairly narrow size limits so that the particle size distributions within the fractions would be essentially similar. As a practical matter, since over any fairly wide size range the within-range size may be expected to be quite different, the compositions may also be expected to differ. Author
