A commercially available stabilized stannous fluoride prophylactic paste was evaluated under varying treatment conditions. The degree of hydration of the treatment was shown to affect the ability of the paste to impart a reduction of solubility to enamel. Application of the past without the addition of water was ineffective in reducing enamel solubility. Use of the paste as a 50 slurry with mixed saliva resulted in a reduction in enamel solubility that approached that achieved by the use of a freshly prepared stannous fluoride prophylactic paste.
