A brief review of the theoretical aspects underlying the use of the mass spectrometer for studying the thermochemical behavior of alloys is presented. Various considerations of the problem are mentioned and discussed with special emphasis on titanium alloys. These include the use of various methods for measuring the activity or free energy change. For the mass spectrometer to be utilized efficiently for studies on alloys, some ratio method is usually used directly or modified. Various modifications of the ratio method are discussed, both for binary and ternary alloy systems. Author
