An engineering evaluation program was conducted on D size primary lithium-organic electrolyte cells. They were evaluated under a variety of conditions to determine feasibility of the system to meet representative sensor and manpack communications requirements, normally met with magnesium or mercury dry batteries. The cells demonstrated good performance capability in terms of energy density, low temperature -20F operation, and charge retention following storage at 130F and 160F. Initial voltage delay was found to exist at low temperature or after high temperature storage. Cell conditioning may be required in some cases. Author
