On the Motion of the a/2 <111> Screw Dislocation in Alpha Iron.

The atomic configuration of a microkink along a a2 111 screw dislocation in alpha-iron is described. The core in the kink is 2 to 3 Burgers vectors wide and 4 to 5 Burgers vectors long. The energy of the kink is 0.08 eV and the atomic positions in the core are not very sensitive to the size of the model and to the choice of interatomic force law. It is shown that infinitely long straight dislocations move only under Peierls stresses considerably larger than expected experimentally. Kinked dislocations on the other hand move under more reasonable stresses. Author
