New methods have been developed for investigating the detergent properties of motor oil additives Methods of determining the ability of the additives to prevent or break down the sorption contact of the carbon black with iron oxide powder the method of determining the dispersion properties with the aid of paper chromatography. The mechanism of the detergent action of succinimide additives was investigated. These additives can prevent the separation of polar particles of carbon black on the surface of a metal oxide, insure the dispersion effect, i.e., they can wash away the polar particles of carbon blacks absorbed on the surface of a metal and reduce the size of the aggregates of impurity particles as well as insure stabilization of the suspension of carbon black in the oil.
