Abstract:

A systematic theoretical and empirical framework is for the study and correlation of aerodynamic drag information is an important application of the methodology of rarefied gas dynamics. In this paper a flight regime is considered for a slender pointed cone where the first effects on drag of intermolecular collisions between gas molecules which have already struck a body surface, and freestream molecules, appear. The phenomena discussed here correspond to hypersonic reentry into the upper atmosphere, where the first corrections to the traditional free-molecule drag coefficient are likely to be significant.
