A Theory of Moderately Thick Structural Elements. Part I. Thick Beams.

The report presents a theory of moderately thick plates and shells as it specifically applies to thick beams. The technique, based on a power series expansion of the displacement field about the middle surface, is applicable to any elastic body, but is directly applied to beams. An example problem is solved by the higher order techniques and compared with the Euler solution and the elasticity solution. The results were very close to the elasticity solution. This theory gives a workable beam theory for much smaller LD ratios that Euler beam theory. Author
