The aim of these investigations was to use a new type of double-beam monochromator to extend the spectral range of observations to wavelengths shorter than 1050A. Improving on a technique developed elsewhere of freezing a gaseous beam directly on a cooled fluorescent material placed behind the exit slit of the monochromator and detecting the signal photoelectrically, it was possible to record, for the first time, spectra of pure solid Ne, pure solid CF4, and solid N2 both pure and trapped in the Ne and CF4 matrices. Thus, observations to about 750A and 4.2K were achieved. It was established that Ne and CF4 are useful as matrices above 750 and 930A, respectively. The need for the Wannier exciton model for Ne becomes questionable because the solid Ne spectrum peak energy positions are shown to be very close to the gas phase values. Disappearance of the Rydberg molecular transitions for solid N2 and CO are confirmed. Author
