Abstract:
A combined theoreticalexperimental investigation of the importance of aerodynamic shear in the char removal from nylon-phenolic ablators is presented. The equations and numerical techniques used in a computer program developed to predict the one-dimensional behavior of charring ablators is also presented. In addition, a description of the experimental techniques employed in the measurement of char shear strength is given. It is shown that the shear strength of a 50 nylon-50 phenolic ablator during or after charring is an order-of-magnitude higher than the aerodynamic shear stresses developed during hypersonic flight at low altitudes.
