Abstract:
The local density gradient in a rarefied flow was measured by oscillating an electron beam between two well-defined spatial limits and processing the resultant A. C. photomultiplier signal with a lock-in amplifier. The D. C. output was proportional to Delta rho is the fluorescence of the beam was linearly related to density. A theory is presented to demonstrate the limitations of the technique. Measurements in a free jet flow confirm its usefulness and demonstrate its inherently high sensitivity. Author
