Abstract:

Bistrifluoromethyliodophosphine sulfide reacts with limited quantities of mercury to give the diphosphorus compound CF32PS-PCF32 in which the phosphorus atoms are bridged by a sulfur atom. This same compound is better synthesized from the reaction of bistrifluoromethyldithiophosphinic acid with either dimethylaminobistrifluoromethylphosphine or with chlorobistrifluoromethylphosphine. The mixed-valence compound is stable to air or sulfur oxidation but reacts with hydrogrn halides, halogens, and mercury. Hydrolysis by water and alkaline solutions gave 1 and 3 mol of CF3H, respectively per mole of compound. The diphosphine tetrasulfide, CF32PSSSPSCF32, was best prepared by bromination of salts of bistrifluoromethyldithiophosphnic acid. The tetrasulfide also reacted with mercury, halogens, hydrogen halides, and hydrogen sulfide, but not with oxygen or sulfur. A simpler synthesis of CF32PSSH is also described. Author
