TRIAD will be a three-axis gravity-stabilized satellite, using magnetic hysteresis rods for passive dissipation of librational energy. The proposed spacecrafts attitude control system has been evaluated using an interactive hybrid-computer simulation as the principal analytical technique. The interactive hybrid system, which uses actual permeable rod dampers to accurately model the magnetic hysteresis, is unique in the high degree of man-machine interaction that can occur during a simulation execution. This memorandum discusses the TRIAD satellite and the hybrid system used to simulate its dynamic behavior. Initial simulation results indicate that the proposed control system provides adequate damping when required, as well as good steady-state stabilization. Author
