The principle program objective is to effect an increase in the intrinsic dynamic strength of piezoelectric ceramic materials, commonly used in Navy sonar projectors and hydrophones, through the introduction of alpha alumina sapphire whiskers into the ceramic matrix. Recent investigations have been concerned with the effect of material blending techniques and manufacturing procedures on the ultimate dynamic strength and piezoelectric properties of 3 by weight whisker reinforced samples of Types I hard, II soft, and III very hard lead zirconate titanate materials. Test results show increases of 25 to 500 in dynamic strength, improved high temperature stability, reduced dielectric loss, very considerable improvement in dielectric permittivity aging characteristics, and slightly reduced electromechanical coupling and linear behavior to higher drive levels than that obtainable in nonwhisker reinforced counterparts.
