Abstract:

Initial experiences with a laboratory-constructed carbon filament atom reservoir are described. The device has been used in a standard commercial atomic absorption spectrophotometer, replacing the normal burner-nebulizer system an integrating read-out attachment has been devised to capture the rapid signal emission given by most elements. Very high sensitivities of detection are found magnesium and zinc can be detected at 10 picagrams, and in all, 15 elements have been detected at levels of 0.1 microgram or below. Precision is of the order plus or minus 10-15, on pure solutions. Some applications and further prospects are discussed. Author
