The initial gas force is defined as the cost function in the optimization of a soft-recoil mechanism. Design parameters and their constraints are defined. The necessary equations to solve the optimization problem by steepest-descent method are derived. An 18 per cent reduction in the initial gas force was obtained and, at the same time, the constraints of the problem were satisfied. The results clearly indicate the useful applicability of optimization techniques to weapon design. Author
