Abstract:

The effect of a surface layer of alluvium or weathered rock on the field of a buried vertical dipole is calculated. It is found that the intensity of the anomalies is more strongly affected than the shape of the curves. When the surface layer is highly conducting, the intensity of the anomalies may be reduced by a factor of 10 and the parameters Q and M of the potential curves are increased, but not very much usually not by more than 10-15 percent when the surface layer is highly resistive the intensity of the anomalies increases, but not more than twice those over a homogeneous medium, and the parameters Q and M decrease a couple of tens of percents.
