A model for a network of computers has been developed and a simulation program has been produced. A network of computers consists of two or more computer systems which communicate with each other and which may have their own family of remote terminals and may be, but are not necessarily, geographically separated. The computer located at each node of the network is characterized by its multiprogramming capability, the amount of main storage available, the number of IO channels available, and its job stream. The job stream is described by a set of probability distributions. The network itself is described by the node connections. An algorithm is given to determine whether all the nodes of the network form a connected graph. A dynamic routing algorithm is given to determine the route which a message should traverse in a non-fully connected network for a computer-to-computer communication. The simulator facilitates the analysis of tradeoffs between centralized and distributed data bases, the study of network performance, and communication line and data bank utilization.
