Abstract:

Costs of using troops to crush base rock CBR and aggregate are estimated from historical data and used as a basis of comparison to determine when shipping crushed rock should be used as an alternative to using troops. It was determined that the large bulk aggregate carriers could fill a need by providing a method of obtaining crushed rock in support of Navy and Marine forces when the time element of a contingency 6 months duration precluded the use of troops and the shipping distance was relatively short. However, it is apparent that troops can produce the CBR more economically than it can be shipped to the battle area when the contingency is long term and large quantities of CBR are needed. Author
