A new approach to the dynamics of multilayered plates with anisotropy and viscoelasticity is presented. Some of the layers may be constituted by thinly laminated materials giving rise to stress- couples. The theory takes into account the fundamental skin effect of solid mechanics, and the cross-sectional distortion of the layers. While much simpler than the theory of Elasticity it provides a considerable refinement of classical plate theories. Plane strain solutions are developed for simply supported and built-in plates. The damping is derived from approximate expressions which bring out the contribution of individual layers to the overall damping. Application to plates with one, two and three layers are discussed. For transverse isotropic plates three-dimensional solutions are immediately derived by superposition of plane strain solutions. This is applied to multilayered plates with rectangular, and circular plan form. Author, modified-PL
