Abstract:

A program was undertaken to determine if nondestructive infrared scanning techniques could be applied to the inspection of sintered iron rotating bands for adequate seating on the 105mm Rocket assisted projectile XM548 and XM566. The standard seating deformation test cannot be used on sintered metal. Under the sponsorship of the Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center a method was developed which successfully identified all defective bands in an especially prepared batch of twenty bodies. The feasibility of rapid and automated inspection has been demonstrated, permitting up to one hundred percent production line testing. Author
