Abstract:
The theory of tilting of a layered elastic half-space under harmonic, point, and distributed loads whose amplitudes vary with time is developed. The tilting of continental and oceanic models for the crust and upper mantle under point loads are then computed and combined with published values of the offshore tide distribution to predict semi-diurnal tilts at Bedford, Massachusetts. The theoretical results compare favorably with preliminary observations using the borehole biaxial tiltmeters. Author
