Abstract:

The report describes the work performed as part of Task 24-6009, by CSC on a study of intercomputer communication via satellite. The study addressed the problems of designing an extremely low error rate e.g., 10 to the -10th power communication system for the transmission of large quantities of computer data between two remote locations. The intercomputer channel can, in general, consist of several interconnect links, between the source computer and DSCS terminal, a multiple hop satellite link and a corresponding number of interconnect links between the final satellite earth terminal and the receiving computer location. In order to satisfy the near negligible error rate requirements of the computer data, the application of forward error control techniques was investigated. The study effort includes an analysis, evaluation and recommendations for both a separate coding technique, for the interconnect links and the satellite links, and an end-to-end coding technique for the entire cascade channel.
