Abstract:

Two distinct types of experiments are employed to examine the behavior of Westerly granite below 25 kbar to explosively created spherical impulses. One examines radial stress-time histories of the rock with manganin piezoresistive stress transducers the other examines particle velocity-time histories using the electromagnetic velocity gauge technique. The observed response indicates that yielding and dilatant effects are occurring, although they are less prevalent than previously observed at stress levels above 25 kbar. An indication that the material response could be rate-dependent as well as dilatant is based on the good agreement with measurements predicted by a linear viscoplastic model. Also, a model based on triaxial static data with dilatancy and workhardening provides for agreement with the observed response. Author
