Abstract:

The influence of the process variables in oxygen-alkali bleaching on the pulp characteristics were studied using a pine sulphate pulp. Reaction time, reaction temperature and charge of alkali are all highly significant to the changes in intrinsic viscosity and Kappa number during bleaching while oxygen pressure and pulp consistency are of less importance. During bleaching the relation between intrinsic viscosity of the pulp and Kappa number is linear except at the beginning of the reaction period and at low Kappa numbers. The brightness of the oxygen-alkali bleached pulp is completely determined by its Kappa number. Suitable combinations of process variables to obtain a pulp with a Kappa number 20 and an intrinsic viscosity 950 cu cmg are given together with the costs for the different alternatives. Author
