Abstract:
Some difficulties are encountered using the present methods for determination of acid numbers in aircraft turbine oils, base stocks and used oils. This applies especially to aged oils for which the inflection points can sometimes hardly be established or not at all. Preliminary tests with pure substances show the influence of solvents and their mixtures on the curve and inflection point, using tetrabutyl-ammoniumhydroxide as a titrating agent. Optimum results were obtained with chlorobenzenedimethyl- sulphoxide and toluenedimethyl-sulphoxide 31. The dependency of the acid number on the size of sample as well as the repeatability have been investigated on various aircraft oils. An improved method for the aviation sector is given. Author
