Cellulose and cellulose derivatives were modified by reaction with epoxides, halides, and isocyanates, and by exposure to gamma radiation in an effort to prepare elastomeric materials. Plastic as well as elastomeric materials resulted from isocyanate modification of hydroxypropyl cellulose. The elastomeric materials were cross-linked with dicumyl peroxide producing vulcanizates that exhibited tensile strengths of 920 psi, 140 per cent elongation at break, 20 per cent volume swell after immersion in ASTM No. 3 oil for 70 hours at 212 F, and flexibility at temperatures as low as -45 F.
