Abstract:

An electron-paramagnetic-resonance investigation has been made of several rare-earth ions in the laser host crystal lithium yttrium fluoride. Spectra were obtained for trivalent neodymium, dysprosium, erbium, and ytterbium in single crystals of this scheelite. The measurements were made at X-band and 4.2K. The ions were found to have axial spectra which, together with chemical arguments, indicate that they occupy Y3 sites with S4 point symmetry. The g factors and hyperfine parameters were obtained by complete diagonalization of the spin Hamiltonian and least-squares fitting to the observed spectra. The ground-state irreducible representations for Yb3 and Nd3 were determined to be Gamma 5,6 and Gamma 7,8, respectively. Superhyperfine structure was observed in the Yb3 c-axis spectrum. Author
