Stability of a Viscous Jet-Non-Newtonian Liquids

An experimental investigation is made of the stability of viscous jets of a non-Newtonian fluid consisting of solutions of CMC Carboxymethyl Cellulose in water. The Newtonian fluid properties of CMC solutions are correlated in terms of a relaxation time, which can be estimated theoretically, and two characteristics viscosities, all of which depend only on the additive concentration. The breakup distance for CMC solutions is compared to the known properties of Newtonian jets, as well as theoretical and experimental results for non-Newtonian fluids from other sources.
