Abstract:
The latest phase of an experimental and analytical investigation to develop design characteristics for improved rain erosion resistant coatings is described. Dynamic fracture measurements with a split Hopkinson pressure bar facility have been correlated with AFML rocket sled tests. High speed photography has been used to observe the dynamic deformations of coating materials. The role of fatigue in rain erosion is defined, by an analysis of a wide variety of simulated rain experiments on polymethylmethacrylate. Stress wave interaction studies of coating-substrate systems have been initiated as background for development of multilayered erosion protection coatings. Author-PL
