Second-Order Theory for Nonsinusoidal Oscillations of a Cylinder in a Free Surface.

A nonlinear hydrodynamic response resulting from vertical oscillations of a two-dimensional horizontal cylinder in a free surface of an incompressible, inviscid fluid is investigated. The cylinder is forced to oscillate at the sum of two monochromatic frequencies. Numerical results are presented graphically for the hydrodynamic force and outgoing waves associated with the difference of the two fundamental frequencies for a semisubmerged circular cylinder. Results previously obtained for the first-order and some second-order hydrodynamic quantities are also shown for purposes of comparison. Author
