Abstract:

Many problems in engineering and mathematics require the manipulation of polynomials. Methods for doing this which are adaptable to digital computer use range from the symbolic algebra method to the purely numerical methods. The polynomial algebra method, which lies somewhere between these two extremes, has been implemented in an interpreter called HPAL. Instead of simple polynomials, the variables in this method are rational algebraic functions represented as ratios of products of polynomials which are themselves represented symbolically. The potential inherent in the HPAL approach to polynomial manipulation in digital computers is illustrated by the example of a radar antenna servo analysis. Author
