Abstract:

An experimental investigation has been made of the characteristics of a number of subsonic nozzles and three-dimensional turbulent jets which they produce. Parameters investigated are primarily related to the efficiency with which the nozzles produce thrust and the transverse growth of the jets issuing from them. Data is presented which helps to elucidate the compromise which must be made between efficient thrust production and rapid jet spreading for application to the design of ejector primary nozzles. Most data is taken for jets exhausting into a quiescent atmosphere, but an extension of the data to a moving secondary stream is indicated and experimentally verified. Author
